Geek + Website + Christmas tree = Christmas Tree Cam!
|
|
|
I did it last year and I'm going to do it again this year. The Christmas Tree Cam.
I'm planning on putting it up within the next few days. I got the camera and server ready to go, and got the website set up for it. All I need to do now is figure out where to put the three, where to mount the camera, and how the camera should be set up.
While talking with my wife about the camera I came up with the brilliant idea to use an un-used NIC cable already wired from the office to the front room to facilitate connectivity to the camera and computer. I don't want to cut into the wire, so I'll use some female RJ-45 jacks to make adapters.
I'll blog throughout the process in the comments. As usual feel free to add your own comments.......unless your a scum sucking spammer.
Geez, wish I had a picture of last year's Christmas Tree Cam. Well, I do, but its corrupt.

Got the tree up and the camera set. I was having a problem keeping focus on the camera. I'm not sure why, but there seem to be something wrong with the LCD screen on it. When you turn the screen in the normal way it stays upside down, and when you close it, it doesn't shut off as it suppose too. I think it may have something to do with when I dropped it a few weeks back, accidently tripping over its power cord.
Well, maybe I can find a repair man to fix it some time.
Anyway, I got all the bugs worked out and I'm pretty happy with what you can see. The only test will be what Merita will think when she views the camera tomorrow.
She knows how much of the living room will be visible, but its even more than what I expected. Nonetheless it looks good and I'm typing like I've been up 5 hours to many. I'll quit typing right now.
okay now.
No, really this time.
See. Oh crap forget it.

But you know when I think about it, I've been using the camera since that moment I dropped it and it's been working properly. Could it be from age? This camera is three or four years old. Nonetheless dropping it surely didn't help things, but at the same time isn't this type of equipment made to handle a drop?
Either way, I don't feel good when something bad happens to something. Especially since its something I use that isn't mine. Maybe I'm just going crazy from lack of sleep. A cat nap may be in my very near future.
Anyway, I've noticed some distortion in the video feed. It's minimal so I'll let it slide. The camera is in a good, save location and all the cables are secure.
Just an FYI, the camera requires Java to view. If you don't have Java, why? Who doesn't have Java these days? Get it for crying out loud!

Does the iPhone support java? I think so. Not Flash though...I know what much. Surely they'll get that fixed by generation 2.

This is slightly off subject and slightly on. I just got a call from a guy from my office; the guy who does my job on my day off... The ISP hosting the web and mail servers for our company is down and there is no way to contact them about this problem.
I jokingly said if they put a T1 line in my house I could host it here. He didn't laugh. In fact he said the boss might go for that. This will be very interesting. I will have to adjust my network a little bit. Right now I have no external DNS in house. I use no-ip.com's DDNS system. If they put a T line in my house, I will have to adjust my DNS to external resources. I will also have to adjust my mail system a bit.
Guess the real question to myself is will I be ready to set up a full blown, professional, industry standard network? That'll be one hell of a technological ejaculation.
