Update(1): RSS Modification/An Apathetic View Toward Web Administration
|
|
|
Update: 5/7/07 I've been hacking to find a way to include the ability for viewers to leave comments. I have no idea how many people are actually reading these posts, and if there are anyone reading them, if they'll have any input.
It came back down to my CMS. I had to find a way to implement the comments into the content manager. I'm not a php programmer beyond being able to modify already made scripts. Maybe I'd be able to write something if I push hard enough. Just to lazy to study PHP and hack out the logic of it.
But this seems to work fairly well. For each post I make, a new comment page is created to go along with that post. I wanted to have the comments on the face page, but the script freaked out when I tried that. I'm planning on writing a script to do a data pulling kind of thing where comments left will be on the front page. If you see comments on the index page, that means it's done. ____________
In the whole style of "Fine is never good enough" I did some tweaking to my RSS feed. I set it up to include photos and various posts along with video. It only took 20 minutes or so of modifying of my CTS to accept and have a way to enter these new entries.
I was thinking about explaining how I have all this stuff set up on the admin end. But naah, I'm too lazy. It's basically a glorified/modified content managing system, some SSI badges, and some php and javascript mixed in. And if I get real brave, I'd mix MySQL in there. Naah, using flat files work just fine. Yeah, you know. If any youngsters out there plan to get into web administration/web design, stay in school kids. Learn your ABC's.....That being, C, C++, PHP, Perl (naah, it's on the way out), aah, what the hell, also learn COBOL. And just for fun, learn VB, might turn out useful. Ah well, it's late, that's enough of a point. Forget proof reading.

This is one way to add the comments ability with Coranto. If anyone wants to know how I did this, I'll be happy to share.

Hey Jason,
I must say again that The Roaming Gnome at Work video was hilarious. Keep up the good work (or is it non-work while at work?). :-)

Lol, thanks. I have a few more videos on the burner, but lately I've been plagued with a low attention span. That, and the thought of a total re-design of this website.

NP. Yeah, ASP generally only works on Windows. One CAN do ASP on a UNIX/Linux box, but you need Chilisoft and it ain't cheap: www.sun.com/software/chilisoft/
I haven't messed around with PHP - just ASP and Perl for Win32.
Happy Thursday to ya - let's see some more hardly working vids. :-)

I have been working on a new design for this website for the better part of this week. It's designed using .php files.
PHP is nice. I was trained in C++ and PHP flows very much like C++. I haven't written any C++ programs since college, but I'm not writin PHP scripts, only modifying scripts to work for me. PHP is easy to work with since it can be placed almost anywhere. The only problem with it is, if it's not set up properly (permissions) it can be exploited.
Is ASP a .Net component, much like how Microsoft made VB and C++?
Hopefully, I'll be able to move everything to the new design within the next 24 hours. I still need to install and configure my web stats software, and I'm still not sure what will happen to my mySQL control panel when I move this site to a sub-domain.
When I finish this design, hopefully I'll be able to finish at least one of these videos sitting in my laptop. Last night was a hardly working night though. I was hacking on my new website more than doing actual work.
